Welcome Message

Hello, my name is Rajbans

It all started in 1995 when I returned from United Kingdom as the first geriatrician in the Ministry of Health of Malaysia. We started the first geriatric ward in Seremban Hospital. Six months later realized that most of my patients were not ageing well. They suffered from chronic diseases that made them immobile, dependent and depressed. A number were frail, had sarcopenia (a degenerative condition marked by the loss of muscle mass, strength and function) and malnourished. They were lonely and just waiting to die. This was not my vision of healthy ageing. Hence, started my journey of “Wellness and Healthy Ageing” twenty years ago.

My wife and a few friends got on to the bandwagon. We started the Healthy Ageing Society and later the Malaysian Wellness Society.

Over the years as I went deeper into the study and research of healthy ageing I realized that even the younger generation were not ageing well and were already suffering from chronic metabolic diseases which were leading to heart attacks, strokes and cancers. The focus of most healthcare provider was disease detection and treatment and very little or almost none on prevention. The focus was on sickness and health (i.e. the absence of disease) and none on wellness (proactively doing things every day to prevent disease from starting in the first place). I realized that most people were confused about wellness and there was no holistic approach to well-being.

As I started giving talks both locally and overseas and from my radio show on Lite FM the need for knowledge on wellness was definitely necessary. Hence the reasons for this blog. Our motto, “Live Long, Live Well”.

About my life

After graduating from the University of Mysore in 1984, I served as a medical officer in various hospitals including the general hospitals in Kuching, Klang and Seremban. In 1992, I received my Membership from the Royal College of Physicians UK and thereafter served as a specialist at Seremban Hospital.

In 1994, I was granted a government scholarship to pursue my sub-specialisation in Geriatrics at Cardiff Royal group of hospitals. I served in Cardiff as an honorary registrar and got his Diploma in Geriatric Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians in London. I came back to Malaysia in 1995 and started the first geriatric ward in Malaysia at Seremban Hospital, thus making me the first geriatrician in the Ministry of Health.

Then, I served as a Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Head of the Geriatric Unit at Universiti Putra Malaysia and as a Consultant Physician and Geriatrician at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Currently, I’m a consultant at Pantai Hospital Bangsar and have started the Healthy Aging Centre at Pantai, again another first in the country. I’m also the Medical Director at Beacon Laureate and Consultant Physician at Beacon Specialist Medical Centre.

Besides that, I’m also the member of the Elderly Committee of Malaysian Medical Association, Member of the Malaysian Gerontological Association, Member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and Member of the British Geriatric Society.

I was the founding member and past-president of Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society and the current president of the Malaysian Wellness Society. I’m also a Certified Nutrigenomics Practitioner and the International Medical Advisor to Fitgenes Australia. I have also developed a course on wellness and healthy ageing in collaboration with Open University Malaysia with focus on educating public on preventive health, wellness and longevity.

Having a keen interest in the ageing process especially in the early detection and prevention of disease, I have been invited to give numerous talks on healthy ageing and wellness and has presented at conferences in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

I have also written numerous articles on health- and wellness-related issues in local publications, health magazines and medical publications. I have spoken to many corporations on the concept of healthy ageing including Nestle, Cerebros, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC, OCBC, UOB, Hong Leong Bank, Serono, Aventis, IJM, ExxonMobil, Amway as well as to many clubs and associations.
